Statement Regarding Arts Representative to SSMU

Ananya Nair | AUS President Updates

The AUS does not support racism, sexism, or prejudice in any form. We are, as a society, committed to equity and inclusivity. We do not condone the use of violence for any purpose.

The recent concerns regarding Igor Sadikov, an Arts Representative to SSMU, are legitimate. We regret that any member of our community felt alienated by a member of the AUS team.

Igor’s words were his own, published on his personal social media. His opinions do not reflect the sentiments of the Arts Undergraduate Society or of its executive.

We recognize that the issue of Zionism has historically been a controversial topic on our campus, and hope that students on either side of the debate can feel safe and included in AUS spaces.

As we continue to investigate appropriate recourse for this matter, we would like to thank you for your patience. As well, we would like to express our gratitude for your comfort in reaching out to express your thoughts – particularly with regard to such an emotionally charged topic. We take student consultation very seriously, and hope that you can continue to rely on us to best represent your interests.

Many of those who are uncomfortable with Igor’s continued presence on the AUS team have called for his removal. It is important to note that, as executives, we do not hold the power to directly impeach a member of our team. That said, we have formally requested Igor’s resignation, particularly due to his encouragement of violence.

Processes such as these often require patience and consideration. In the meantime, we encourage students to consult our constitution to understand the full range of available options.
