Announced Course Cuts in Faculty of Arts

webmaster Headlines

At the Faculty of Arts Committee meeting on January 28th, 2014 Dean of Arts Christopher Manfredi announced that due to a 10% cut in the Contract Academic Staff budget for each faculty ordered by Provost Anthony Masi in April 2013, there would be corresponding cut of $366,298 to the Faculty of Arts CAS budget. This decreased budget translates to a decreased course offering of 50 classes, because there is less money to hire the CAS (ie. sessional professors) needed to teach them. Obviously this isn’t good news for anyone, but it is especially bad news for Arts students. Therefore, I and the AUS will be working tirelessly to improve this situation for AUS members with the goal of mitigating the impact these budget cuts have on the courses available to us. Already we have met with the Dean, and we are in the process of setting up meetings with both him and the Provost in the near future. I have included a link to a presentation I delivered yesterday to AUS Council (link here: VP Academic Report on Course Cuts To AUS Council Jan 29 ) that gives a breakdown of the entire situation related to these cuts, how it can progress from here, and how we can act to represent the interests of Arts Students in these difficult times. I encourage you to view the Report to Council for more information, but please feel free to contact me at academic.aus@mail.mcgill.ca with any questions, concerns, or comments regarding these course cuts.

Sincerely,

Jacob Greenspon
