AUS Passes Traditional Territory Acknowledgement

On the September 17th session of AUS Council, the AUS voted to pass the Traditional Territory Acknowledgement motion. You can see on our website homepage that we have posted a statement paying respect to the fact that McGill is situated on traditional Kanienkeha:ka territory. At the beginning of every session of AUS Council, we state the traditional territory acknowledgement to remind ourselves of our relationship to this space and its legacy of colonialism.

Here is the statement in full:

AUS would like to acknowledge that McGill University is situated on the traditional territory of the Kanienkeha:ka, a place which has long served as a site of meeting and exchange amongst nations. AUS recognizes and respects the Kanienkeha:ka as the traditional custodians of the lands and waters on which we meet today.

Be it resolved, that the Traditional Territory Acknowledgment be stated at the beginning of all sessions of AUS Legislative Council.

Be it resolved, that the Traditional Territory Acknowledgement be featured in a prominent location on AUS’s website.”

The AUS supports indigenous rights and sees this as part of the process to bettering our relationship to the indigenous community.
